New Year, Monarchs, and a Harvest Festival the Nigerian Way -Taylorsville-

Our new school year is off to a great start! We’ve been busy enjoying all of our work! Our shelves burst with lessons about Monarch butterflies, Fall and Nigeria…It has been our school’s tradition for years to celebrate a Harvest Festival every September by inviting a group of dancers from a different country. This year, we received a puppet theater from Nigeria! In the classroom, we learned about this beautiful culture: we dressed up in Nigerian clothes, looked at pictures of people and animals that live there, listened to African music, made yamaritas (a Nigerian sweet potatoes’ snack) and shuku shuku (coconut balls), and matched the artwork of Nike Davies Okundaye, a famous Nigerian Artist:). Our Monarch caterpillars are doing really well! We love watching them feed on milkweed then jay before building their chrysalises:). We can’t wait to see our butterflies emerge out of their beautiful cocoons:). Our classroom trees look dazzling with the leaves that we color…We’ve been making leaf prints and rubbings as well:). Happy Birthday to Piper and Makenna!
