Monarch Butterflies, Egypt, and Harvest Festival -Sykesville-

The children had an exciting and joyful time learning about Monarch butterflies and Egypt. In the two weeks leading up to the school’s annual Harvest Festival, the classrooms were filled with creativity and discovery. The children explored the wonders of ancient Egypt—listening to Egyptian music, admiring pictures of pharaohs, and dressing up like royalty, countryside villagers, and southern people. They crafted clay pyramids, created Egyptian landscapes with sand and animal figurines, and wrote their names in beautiful hieroglyphics on handmade bookmarks. They also enjoyed making Egyptian pancakes and bread served with feta cheese, tomatoes, and fresh mint from the school’s garden. Meanwhile, in their science studies, the children observed Monarch caterpillars feeding on milkweed leaves, forming chrysalises, and transforming into magnificent butterflies. They expressed their fascination through butterfly-themed artwork and a special snack made of mandarins, cream cheese, crackers, and blueberries. The unit culminated in a joyful Harvest Festival, where Egyptian dancers performed folkloric dances for families and children. Everyone delighted in the lively music, dancing, and delicious potluck meal—and the children’s smiles shone brightest as they joined the dancers on stage, celebrating the beauty of learning, culture, and community.
